Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open 2017, full of firsts! Gideon & Kevin claim their first win in Japan projecting them to World No. 1!

The Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open 2017 concluded on September 24th, drawing in a crowd of 6,000 during the finals, and 27,850 spectators over the course of the tournament!

Indonesian duo, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon (ASTROX 77) and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (ARCSABER 11) took home their first Men’s Doubles title in Japan.  Following wins earlier in the year at the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships, Indian Open, and Malaysian Open, brings the pair to 4 Super Series wins in 2017. Winning the final match in straight sets with their fast pace and unpredictable feints, the pair regained the World No.1 ranking in doing so. 
 

The pair were thrilled with their victory, “we are really happy to get the victory today. It’s our first since April.  We have to continue to do our best for the sport of badminton in Indonesia."  Recently switching to the new ASTROX 77, Marcus credited his racquet in finding his form, “the racquet is very good.  Since I began using it, I can tell my power and speed has increased!"

Spectators were delighted to an epic men’s singles final, with a DUORA showdown between Malaysian Legend Lee Chong Wei (DUORA 10), aiming for his seventh championship win, and recent World Champion Viktor Axelsen (DUORA Z-STRIKEAEROBITE) aiming for his first victory.

Viktor successfully battled past the tenacious attacks of Lee Chong Wei and overwhelmed with his first victory in Japan. "I was nervous to face Lee Chong Wei, but I'm glad that I performed my best” said the relieved Dane post-match with a delighted smile as the first-time win projected him to World No.1!

In Women’s Singles, Carolina Marín (DUORA Z-STRIKE) showed overwhelming strength against Bingjiao He of China in the finals.  Grabbing her first win at the Japanese tournament, the Spanish sensation stated, "I want to steadily build up victories to become the top ranking player in the world!"

Japanese players Ayaka Takahashi (DUORA 7) and Misaki Matsutomo(Nihon Unisys) showed the strength of their game and defeated Korean pair Ha Na Kim and Hee Yong Kong, winning their second victory in Japan.

As always, the Yonex Stringing team supported all the players at the Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open 2017.  Along with the stringing, Yonex supplied the tournament’s shuttlecocks and court mats.  Players were once again satisfied with the Yonex quality and support. Players expressed their trust in the Yonex-run tournament, Russian doubles pair, Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov boasted reliability and how the "Yonex shuttle is very easy to control."
