Sudirman Cup 2019 – #TeamYonex dominant in group play, rolls into the quarter finals

23 May 2019

Nanning, China – At the Sudirman Cup 2019, of the eight Yonex-sponsored national teams in Group 1, four are moving on to the quarter finals, beginning tomorrow.

From group 1A, both Japan and Thailand advance. Top-seeded Japan proved more than Thailand could handle, winning 4-1 in their head to head tonight. Russia however, the third team in the group, handed them both a stiff challenge on Monday and Tuesday, and was only narrowly defeated 3-2 in both matchups.

Korea and Chinese Taipei both advance from Group 1C. Both countries had a win over Hong Kong but when they met head to head today, it was Korea who came out on top. In the story of the tournament so far, 17-year old An Se Young (KOR) won a stunning upset of the long-reigning World No. 1, Tai Tzu Ying (TPE), to help her team to a narrow 3-2 victory.

Thailand and Korea will face stiff competition as they square off tomorrow, while Japan will take on Malaysia, and Chinese Taipei faces Indonesia, on Friday.

In group 2, Canada toppled Germany, and will face France for the top group honors.
